THE ROYAL CORPS OF SIGNALS

Jimmy, the cap badge of the Royal Corps of Signals

The Corps of Signals was formed on the 28th June 1920, the title "Royal" being conferred on the new Corps on the 5th August 1920.
The official agreement to form a separate Signals Corps from the Corps of Royal Engineers was made in 1918 before the end of World War 1, but due to various policy delays the formation of the "Corps" was delayed until 28th June 1920. The Royal Warrant was signed by the Secretary of State for War, The Right Honourable Winston S Churchill, given the Sovereign's approval to the formation of the Corps of Signals. On the 5th August 1920, His Majesty King George V conferred on the new Corps the great honour of the title Royal. The Royal Corps of Signals was accorded precedence next below the Corps of Royal Engineers. Thus was born the ROYAL CORPS OF SIGNALS.
The present badge was approved in 1946 and is described as: The figure of Mercury holding a caduceus in the left hand; the right hand aloft poised with the left foot on a globe all silver, above the globe a scroll inscribed CERTA CITO and below on each side six laurel leaves all gold, the whole ensigned with the crown in gold.
The Royal Corps of Signals motto is CERTA CITO, which freely translated means "swift and sure". It was approved in 1929. The first Colonel in Chief of the Corps was Her Royal Highness Princess Mary, The Princess Royal, who was appointed in 1935 and died in 1965. Her Royal Highness The Princess Anne became Colonel in Chief in 1977, and it was a particular pleasure for the Corps when she became the Princess Royal in 1987.
The Corps march in quick time is BEGONE DULL CARE.
The Corps march in slow time is HER ROYAL HIGHNESS THE PRINCESS ROYAL.

Mercury was the son of Jupiter and of Maia, the daughter of the Titan Atlas. He was the Roman messenger of the gods, and was also the deity who watched over trade and commerce, as his name suggests, and shared many of the attributes of the Greek god Hermes.
He was associated with peace and prosperity. He was apparently imported from Greece around the fifth century BC.
Mercury is usually depicted in the same way as his Greek counterpart Hermes, with a winged hat and staff, though he was often depicted holding a purse, to symbolize his business functions.

Welsh dragon flag. I'm Welsh you know.
